Thirty-seven Afghanis landed at Tirana International Airport in the early hours of Thursday. In total, Albania has opened its doors to 644 Afghans fleeing Taliban rule.
Upon their arrival, they were temporarily accommodated at “Qyteti Studenti”, a neighborhood dedicated entirely to students studying and living in Tirana, but will eventually be transferred to hotels in one of Albania’s coastal cities.
The country of 2.8 million has vowed to provide temporary shelter for 4,000 Afghanis, as they compile the necessary paperwork to travel to the United States.
Their arrival has stirred public opinion, with some believing that it is a necessary and humanitarian gesture, while others seeing it more as “debt requested by the US”.
Rama has denied the allegations stating that it is a “responsibility of a NATO country”.
224 Afghan citizens have arrived in Kosovo so far, while North Macedonia has accommodated 149.
