The Albanian government has approved a decision, proposed by the Ministry of Defense, that paves the way for former military personnel in reserve to return to active duty. The initiative aims to address personnel needs in the Armed Forces and strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.

According to the decision adopted by the Council of Ministers, former military personnel—officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers, and sailors—will be eligible to return to active service when their expertise or specialization is needed by military structures.

The Ministry of Defense will publish open calls for positions on its official website. Applications must be submitted electronically via the e-Albania platform.

Applicants must provide the required documentation and will undergo evaluation by designated committees, as well as a security clearance. Selected candidates will be reinstated as active-duty personnel and assigned to specific roles, retaining the rank they held at the time of entering reserve status. However, they will not be eligible for rank promotions during the contractual service period.

The decision also specifies that in the event of partial or full mobilization, reservists may be called back into service without prior application, through direct notification from military authorities.

This measure boosts the operational readiness of Albania’s Armed Forces, aligns with NATO standards, and creates new opportunities for former military personnel to serve their country once again.
