For the first time, PM Edi Rama has agreed to take in the Afghan immigrants that have collaborated with US forces during the War in Afghanistan.
Through a comment shared on his social media accounts, Rama put an emphasis on the fact that the hospitality of those, whose lives are at risk in their homelands is a tradition amongst Albanians, drawing a comparison to our hosting of many Jewish families during World War II.
“Yes, it is true that in recent days, the US government has asked Albania to consider becoming a transit nation, for a specific number of Afghan political immigrants, whose final destination will be the United States. It is without a doubt that our answer won’t be no – and that is not only because our great allies are asking but because we are Albania!” writes Rama, amongst other things in his post on Facebook.
This reaction comes after the news published recently by renowned German media agency, Reuters, saying that Albania and Kosovo are amongst the countries that has been secretly conducting talks with the US government, to host thousands of political refugees from Afghanistan whose lives are at risk by the Taleban, because of their close collaboration with the US military.
