The hydropower plants in Drin are not producing energy to cover local needs. For this reason, KESH (Albanian Power Corporation) has started to buy electricity abroad, spending about 10 million euros in 2 weeks.

High temperatures and lack of rainfall has brought back the need to reduce electricity production and buy it in foreign markets.

During the last two weeks, KESH has announced three auctions to buy over 95 thousand megawatts and has finalized them by paying 9.8 million euros.

The price of one megawatt was quoted during the month of June from 65 to 220 euros, but KESH managed to make purchases at an average price of 105 euros.

This year has been good for the local energy system, with a production rate around 30% higher than last year.

Sales and purchases of electricity are common in the procedures carried out by KESH to manage the three hydropower plants of the Drin cascade, where during this year in Fierza and Koman the water level has been at the highest historical quotas.
