An Albanian sentenced to 32 years in prison for murder in the United Kingdom is requesting a transfer to a prison cell in his home country through videos posted on TikTok.
The videos shared by the Albanian inmate have drawn attention in the British media.
Eugert Merizaj, known on social media as “Babale,” managed to smuggle a cellphone into his cell, even though it is strictly prohibited and considered a criminal offense.
During live interactions with his followers, he explained why he is in prison. Regarding his request to return to Albania, the 32-year-old says it is to see his family, as he has not met them in seven years.
He also complained about the prison food, calling it terrible.
What stands out in the videos filmed from his cell are Albanian national symbols, books in the Albanian language, as well as his expensive designer clothing.
Merizaj was also in the spotlight of the British media last year, when he used TikTok to ask his followers for money.
The 32-year-old Albanian was convicted of killing a drug trafficker in 2019, although he has never admitted to the crime.
He was arrested in Belgium and extradited to the United Kingdom.
Albanians make up the largest number of foreign prisoners in the UK. Since May 2023, Albania has had an agreement with the UK for the transfer of prisoners.
It remains to be seen whether Eugert Merizaj’s request will be approved by the authorities.
