The Chief Negotiator for Albania in the European Union, Zef Mazi has recently received a guarantee from Spain in terms of their support in our process of integration.

During the two-day visit conducted by Mazi in Spain, as part of his tour around member states of the EU presenting Albania’s progress, the Chief Negotiator met with the EU Secretary of State, Juan Gonzalez-Barba, the Head of the Commission of Foreign Policies as well as with senator Antonio Gutierrez Limones.

The advisor of the Prime Minister for matters of the EU, Aurora Meja, was also present in the meetings as well as the Albanian Ambassador, Gazmend Barbullushi.

During the meeting with Secretary Gonzalez-Barba, Mazi received the support of Madrid regarding the process of integration. Through a post on his private Twitter account, Mazi states that, “Full support for Albania and the first IGC were underlined”.

Likewise, Gonzalez-Barba also shared on his Twitter account, his views on Spain’s support for Albania’s integration as well as North Macedonia’s. The Spanish official stated that Spain will also be supporting the organization of the first Intergovernmental Conference in June, or in the occasion that this isn’t possible, they offered their support for another date during the Slovenian leadership of the EU Presidency.

In a slightly warmer message, Senator Guitierrez Limones shared the position of Spain by considering his country “the first supporter of Albania’s integration in the EU”.

“[…] Spain is the main supporter of Albania’s integration in the EU. It is a Mediterranean country and brother that needs us and we need them,” – wrote the Senator in his Twitter post.

This June, Albania is expecting that the European Council approves the negotiating framework as well as the recommendation of the European Commission for the organization, within this year, of the first Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) regarding accession and membership talks.

The integration matter for our country was postponed by a year because of the skepticism and opposition that several member states have expressed, in terms of the methods being followed to achieve these negotiations as well as the situation present in Albania and North Macedonia.

As has been confirmed and evaluated by the Commission on Enlargement and the Neighbourhood for the EU, Mr. Varhelyi, Albania has by now fulfilled all the conditions necessary for the first IGC.
