The US Under-Secretary of State for Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Liz Allen, has considered the formation of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities in Kosovo, as an essential step in realizing Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic goals.
She made these statements after the meeting held on Sunday with the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani.
“I confirm that we support Kosovo’s trajectory towards Euro-Atlantic institutions, through close cooperation, and I know that this is important to you. We discussed the essential step in Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic journey, the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority,” said Allen.
Taking steps towards the Association was also a condition for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe – the leading organization in the field of human rights – earlier in the week.
One day before the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Kosovo authorities said that during the month of May they will send a proposal for the formation of the Association to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo for consideration, but high officials of the West have said that something such is insufficient to fulfill the condition.
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe meets once a year and it remains unclear when Kosovo will be able to become a member of the organization.
