For the first time in Serbia, evidence has been collected about the crimes committed by paramilitary units in the former Yugoslavia.

The crime file includes the activity of one of the most engaged figures in organized crime in Serbia.

It is about Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan, known as the author of massacres in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo.

Arkani is known as the head of the Serbian Volunteer Guard, but at the same time he was one of the leaders of organized crime in Serbia in those years. With the support of Milosevic, he managed to organize special gangs known as “Tigers” who committed crimes in several countries. It is clearly proven that his gangs participated in the Srebrenida genocide, as well as had an active role in the massacres of the civilian population in Kosovo.

For the first time in Serbia, the crimes of Arkan’s paramilitaries are being openly discussed and the researcher Jovana Kolavič has presented a file with most of the crimes involving the Serbian forces. According to Kolavič’s study, Arkan’s units had about 4,000 members, but to date none of them has been convicted for the crimes. The recruitment center for soldiers was on one of the main streets of Belgrade. Part of the paramilitaries were people who had problems with the law and former convicts of serious crimes. The study shows that the paramilitary units were equipped with weapons and military logistics in the 90s by the Milosevic government.

In addition to weapons, it gave them license to carry out crimes and sabotage operations where the regular army was not involved. The crime file shows that this militia is responsible for murders and rapes of women in Bosnia. The Serbian institutions were informed about these crimes in time, but no measures were taken to stop them.
