The dumping of waste in the drains has become a concern in the city of Gjirokastra and its surroundings, as this situation causes flooding during the winter season. For this reason, the work has started to clean about 15 km of sewers in order to avoid damage to the planted lands during rainy days. Engineer Spiro Diamanti, who monitors the work, spoke to Euronews Albania, appealing to the residents to throw the waste in the designated places.
“In this period, we are working on the network of drainage channels, we have finished the works in the Administrative Unit of Odria, we are working in the Cepo, Picar, and Lunxhëri units to achieve the goal of cleaning about 15 kilometers of primary and secondary drainage canals”, said engineer Spiro Diamanti.
A part of the residents, mainly in rural areas, deposit the urban waste and inerts along the collectors in the agricultural lands while a high number of farmers in Gjirokastra have areas planted with fruit trees and vineyards, while the interest in the cultivation of bread grains has decreased.
