The Minister of State, Taulant Balla, stated during the 19th meeting of the Albania–European Union Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee that the government and the opposition have taken important joint steps toward electoral reform.

Balla reiterated the need to immediately resume work on electoral reform in September.

“And of course, the upcoming reform includes something we definitely need to agree on. Therefore, we must provide in the Electoral Code the method for electing Members of the European Parliament.

So, essentially, we have something we can reach consensus on. Also, another issue that seems to enjoy broad support is the need to move forward with the depoliticization of election commissions at the second and third levels.

That’s why I think it’s important to emphasize what one of our colleagues said—that starting in September, we always act the same way: every September, as soon as the new legislature begins, we undertake this process; but this time, it absolutely must happen. And, of course, through consensus. As is always required for electoral reform,” he stated.

Balla specifically mentioned the approval of voting rights for Albanians living abroad.

“The vote of Albanians living abroad was an important step taken together with the opposition,” said Balla, emphasizing that cooperation between the parties has led to tangible progress in reforming the electoral system.
