The chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), Lulzim Basha, welcomed today, Mr. Gunther Krichbaum, Spokesman for European Affairs of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag and also member of the Political Assembly of the European People’s Party. The vice-presidents and the General Secretary of the DP also took part in this meeting.

Basha expressed to Mr. Krichbaum deep gratitude for his special contribution and that of the CDU in support of the DP and Albania’s European journey.

The chairman of the DP stressed that the fight against corruption is a national priority of the Democratic Party, vital for the progress and economic development of the country.

“Albania is ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world and this makes the fight against this phenomenon even more urgent. The Democratic Party supports the work of justice institutions and encourages Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) to resolutely continue its efforts to end impunity and to bring to justice those who have abused the money and trust of citizens”, he said.

Basha also told to Mr. Krichbaum about the initiative for the vetting of politicians, a process which aims to clean up politics by making transparency about the legality of wealth and the purity of the figure in relation to the connections with organized crime of politicians.

In this meeting was also discussed about the electoral reform and the necessity to give power to the vote of the citizens and guarantee free and fair elections.

Focusing on the developments in the Democratic Party, Mr. Basha emphasized that the party is in a process of reorganization, where youth have already become part of the responsibility to build the alternative that Albanians expect and want. Within March next year, PD will select the team of candidates for deputies and will start public discussions on its program, with new proposals and objectives.
