The head of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has described the December student movement as the most important after the declaration of Independence.

“I by no means ignore the war, but the blood that was shed for freedom, for dignity, unfortunately, only took Albania from one invader onto the next; we should tell history like it is – we moved on to a system of dictatorship that has cost Albanians more than any other cruel regime,” said Berisha.

According to him, breaking away from that dictatorship through the student movement was of extraordinary importance.

On December 8, 1990, a group of students and lecturers from the University of Tirana became the initiators and protagonists of one of the greatest turning points in Albanian history – the peaceful protests that brought about the fall of the communist regime and the birth of democracy.
