Border closures due to COVID-19 have brought down the number of people seeking asylum in our country. In 2020, we only had 2232 asylum seekers, a figure that is 66% lower compared to 2019.

More than half of the asylum seekers (54.5%), come from Syria and Iraq and the other part from countries like Afghanistan and Morocco, with 316 and 297 migrants each.

In 2019, 1 in 4 asylum seekers in Albania were women. Almost all requests for asylum were registered in the first trimester of 2019.

However, only 4 requests were approved by government authorities.

In 2020, the drop in the number of asylum seekers went hand in hand with a drop in people being issued the Albanian citizenship.

Only 423 citizens were granted an Albanian passport, or 12.8% less than in 2019.

In 2020, a total of 513 Albanian renounced their passport, giving up on their Albanian citizenship.
