The situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina can de-escalate at any time, as happened last month in Kosovo. This was stated by the new commander of the NATO troops in Bosnia Herzegovina.
The Hungarian Defense Forces have already proven that they are capable of leading a major NATO operation, the new commander of the EUFOR Althea mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina told Hungarian media.
He said that KFOR forces will intervene in the country only if the police will not be able to ensure peace.
Sticz said the root of the current situation is the armed conflict of 1992-95. It ended with the Dayton Agreement, defining the future of the region.
Operation Althea or officially known as EUFOR (European Union Forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina) is an international force operating under the authority of the European Council. The military operation began on December 2, 2004, nine years after the war in Bosnia, with the main task of a peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Following the decision of the Political and Security Committee of the European Union, in January 2024, Hungary offered to lead EUFOR ALTHEA for the first time.
