Brunei has lifted the visa requirement for citizens of Kosovo, becoming the second Southeast Asian country in recent weeks to allow visa-free travel for Kosovars, following Malaysia, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani announced on Monday.

During her official state visit to Brunei, President Osmani signed an agreement with Brunei’s Sultan and Prime Minister, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, to abolish visas between the two countries.

“This decision is an important step toward deepening cooperation between our two states and offers a concrete benefit for our citizens by enhancing connectivity, as well as cultural and economic exchange,” Osmani stated.

Brunei, an independent Islamic sultanate, is located on the northern coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It borders the South China Sea to the north and is otherwise surrounded by Malaysia’s Sarawak state.

Osmani described the agreement as “another testament to the friendship and mutual respect between Kosovo and the Sultanate of Brunei.”

Kosovo and Brunei maintain official diplomatic ties, although limited. Kosovo does not have an embassy or consulate in Brunei, and Brunei has no diplomatic presence in Pristina.

Brunei recognized Kosovo’s independence in 2012, four years after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

At the end of last month, Malaysia also lifted short-stay visa requirements for Kosovo citizens, allowing 30-day visa-free travel.

Until now, Brunei was among 37 countries where Kosovars were required to obtain a visa upon arrival. With this agreement, Brunei becomes the 54th country that Kosovo passport holders can visit without a visa.
