Despite the fact that the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia have not signed it, for the United States, the Agreement towards the normalization of relations is a legally binding agreement, said the senior adviser of the US Department of State, Derek Chollet.

Chollet made these statements in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate, where Washington’s policy in the Western Balkans is being discussed, REL writes.

“We are not seeing great effort on the implementation of this agreement by either party,” declared Chollet.

Chollet, during the introductory speech, said that the Western Balkans region is a priority for the administration of the American president, Joe Biden.

Speaking about the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, he said that they present the main challenge in this region. Chollet reiterated that the European path of both states cannot happen, if they do not resolve their differences.

The agreement towards normalization, according to Chollet, will bring benefits to both countries, adding that the US continues to encourage the parties to implement their commitments.

Washington’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, is also participating in this session.
