1,860 people were employed by municipalities in 2022, bringing the total number of the local administration to 36,660.
The number has significantly increased in Shkodra and Tirana, where each municipality hired 427 and 389 new employees respectively. Put in another way, these units employed an average of more than 1 worker per day. Even Kamza and Memaliaj have expanded their staff in the local administration, with more than 130 hirings.
On the other hand, Vora and Roskovec have seen a reduction in overall staff.
The reasons behind the reduction or increase of workers are different, but for the Institute of Municipalities of Albania, which monitors these movements, a smaller and more efficient local government is advised.
The Institute explains that the population and housing census, expected to start this September, will serve as a guide for more efficient policies in the organization of municipalities.
