By September, Albania had imported 7,027 tons of coffee, marking the highest amount recorded in the past five years. This year’s increase in demand is linked to the large number of tourists visiting the country and the habit of locals, who typically drink two to three cups of coffee per day.

On average, Albania imports about 8,500 tons of coffee annually. This figure represents the typical volume brought into the country in recent years, with fluctuations reflecting not only production levels in exporting countries but also domestic consumption trends.

Official data from the Ministry of Finance show that as of September this year, 7,027 tons of coffee have been imported and consumed — the highest amount in at least the last five years for the same period. In September alone, 870 tons of coffee passed through customs. This rise in demand has also been influenced by the influx of tourists.

As for consumption, data show that an average Albanian consumes about 3.1 kilograms of coffee per year, the lowest level in the region. Serbians lead with 5.4 kilograms per capita, followed by Bosnians with 4.3 kilograms.

Meanwhile, coffee consumption is highest in Scandinavian countries, with Finland topping the list at 9.1 kilograms per person per year, followed by Norway with 7.2 kilograms. In contrast, consumption is much lower in Asian countries, where the strong tea culture continues to limit the spread of coffee drinking.
