Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani declared that municipal elections will not be postponed.
The President informed the media that opposition parties failed to reach an agreement with the ruling majority.
“The only way to postpone the elections is after reaching consensus between the party in power and the opposition”, Osmani said.
According to the President of Kosovo, health authorities appealed to the government to delay the date of the elections, due on October 17, amid a spike in COVID-19 mortalities, but it was the opposition that rejected the proposal.
“I respect the stance of the political parties but I do not agree with them. We can postpone the elections for a maximum of two months”, she added.
Earlier on, the Democratic League of Kosovo called to shorten the time of the election campaign over fears that large gatherings and rallies might contribute to spreading the virus.
Municipal elections in Kosovo are due on October 17.
