Construction work has officially begun on Corridor 8 and Corridor 10D in North Macedonia.
High-ranking state officials inspected the construction and assured that after five years, citizens will witness the benefits of a connecting highway that will bring economic advantages.
Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinator for Highway Construction Artan Grubi provided details about the project.
“A parallel road will be built alongside the highway. The existing Gostivar-Tetovo highway will be demolished and a new three-lane highway will be constructed in both directions. There will be a secondary road to connect the villages, overpasses, and tunnels.”
The project costs 1.3 billion euros and involves the construction of a total of 110 kilometers of highway.
For the government, this is a historic project, the largest in the country’s history, while the North Macedonian opposition has expressed doubts of corruption.
Corridor 8 will provide a connection to the port of Durrës in Albania, while Corridor 10D will connect to the port of Burgas in Bulgaria. Until now, North Macedonia has only had access to the port of Thessaloniki.
The project is expected to create some 8,000 new jobs, attract new investments of 1.3 billion euros, and generate a nominal increase of 2% in Gross Domestic Product over the next five years.
