Consumption of medicines in Albania is increasing, 1,091 tons of medicines were imported in 2 months

The consequences that Covid 19 left on the health of some people continue to direct them to hospitals for specialized medical care.

Dozens of patients present every 24 hours to the consultation service at the Shefqet Ndroqi University Hospital with post-Covid problems. The need for prolonged treatments has also increased the consumption of medications in these 3 years.

According to data from INSTAT Foreign Trade, the group of pharmaceutical products is experiencing steady growth from year to year, but especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Only in the first 2 months of 2023, imports of pharmaceutical products in quantity increased by 31%, marking a new record. During January and February, 1,091 tons of medicines were imported from 833 tons that were imported in the first two months of 2022. Compared to the period before the pandemic, the amount of pharmaceutical products has almost doubled. Vitamins hold a record of use as far as over-the-counter drugs are concerned. The pandemic has negatively affected heart disease, arthritis, kidneys and has created permanent damage to the lungs that require periodic treatment.
