With more than a year and a half until the next parliamentary elections, the Diaspora for Free Albania is advocating for Albanian emigrants who live and work outside the country’s borders to exercise their right to vote.

To make emigrant voting possible, they presented a draft with several changes to the Electoral Code, stating that their model is based on the German system and explaining the steps to be taken.

“You make a request to the Central Election Commission (CEC), stating that you live outside the country and want to vote. They send you a letter with the ballots inside; you fill it out and send it back. It gets counted at a separate time and is stored securely because the security of this vote is very important to us,” said Florian Haçkaj, founder of Diaspora for Free Albania in Friday’s presentation.

Haçkaj also had some messages for the politicians and their delay in progressing in this direction.

“We don’t wish to go to Strasbourg if this isn’t resolved because, believe me, everything has been discussed in advance. We hope that the politicians will do this or at least, it needs to be done before the highest court in the country.”

The draft with the proposed changes will be submitted to the Parliament, the Central Election Commission, and the President of the Republic of Albania.
