The chairman of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has dismissed the hints that he may be sanctioned by the US, if he forms a coalition with former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who has been declared “non grata”.

In a press conference, Meta stated that something like this is not true and added that his relations with the US remain open and principled.

Among other things, Meta underlined that the US is interested in an opposition that is as powerful as possible.

“There is zero truth to this, for the reason that my relations with the USA have been and are always very open and principled. I have no intention and never had to influence their decisions. I have always made my decisions based on the most democratic principles that our constitution has.

No pressure, on the contrary, we had a very constructive conversation and the US is interested in a stronger opposition because they want the accountability system to work in the country”, he emphasized.
