It’s been 23 years since one of the main founders of the Democratic Party and one of the most prominent personalities of Albania’s first years in pluralism, Azem Hajdari, was assassinated, only a few steps from the party’s headquarters in Tirana.

Chair of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, accompanied by several others democratic MPs paid their homages today in front of the memorial dedicated to the leader of the student revolt.

Basha state that the works and sacrifices of Azem Hajdari should serve as a model of inspiration against the violence of an oppressive regime.

“The life work and sacrifices of Azem Hajdari will remain a model of inspiration, to not submit to regime violence, to fight with the determination of the democratic hero and to keep pushing for the ideal “Make Albania like the rest of Europe” – wrote Basha.

The DP leader also noted that Azem Hajdari’s name is a symbol of unity for all democrats, especially during the current circumstances.

“The destiny of democracy is uncertain and Albania’s European perspective is being threatened by corruption and the minority regime,” – continued Basha.

Through resistance and wide-spread support, the leader of the Student Movement of December 1990, Azem Hajdari, was able to overthrow the communist regime in Albania, while also paving the way for the establishment of political pluralism.

In addition, he was also one of the founders of the Democratic Party in Albania and at the same time, he was the leader of the party’s Initiating Commission. Azem Hajdari kept his post as a democratic MP from 1991, until he was murdered, on September 12th 1998.
