The Democratic Party has referred to the decision to impeach Albanian President Ilir Meta as “unconstitutional” and called on the Constitutional Court to “overturn the charade”. To the Democrats, this is an “unconstitutional” and “illegitimate” attack by the Parliament in confront to the institution of the presidency.

“The unconstitutional attack of the illegitimate parliament against the institution of the President of the Republic is an act that plunges even further the anti-democratic features of the Rama-Doshi regime. The act comes right after the electoral massacre and the biggest vote theft ever carried”, the declaration wrote.

104 MPs voted in favor of impeaching president Meta in a session that lasted over 4 hours. This is the first precedent in the country’s pluralist history.

According to the Inquiry Commission, the president had committed “serious constitutional violations” during the electoral campaign ahead of the parliamentary polls held on April 25.

In its conclusive 96-page report, the commission refers to “17 serious violations in the Constitution”

However, it will be the Constitutional Court that has the final say on the matter and decide on whether to enforce the parliament’s decision or overturn it entirely.
