Unfortunately, perhaps it is in the human nature; the most important things for a society, for a parent, for an acquaintance, a friend or neighbor, and even for a stranger, we are reminded to protect them only after a tragic event has taken place.

In a neighborhood in Tirana, a 15-year old girl was sexually abused by the school security guard. She was not safe where her parents thought she would have been safe. At the place where she was supposed to be safe. Despite the society’s reaction through a splendid march, not a long time went by as another incident happened in the city of Berat. A 48-year old sexually molested a 7-year old girl.

It is time to understand that pedophilia is not treated with public calls. We need to start thinking that pedophiles do not think like normal people. They are people suffering from psychiatric disorders, which unfortunately tends to make them sexually aroused from children.

Thus, they are not refrained from moralist calls or awareness. We need to make a distinction between the way pedophiles think and sane people. We need to find a way how to fight this.

We need to find a way how to keep the state accountable, for every chain failing to keep up to its duties. Teachers, psychologist, police officers, police stations, municipalities and the state. We need to become our own watchdogs. Only in this way we may protect ourselves and prevent this.

Protesters called for the creation of a public registry for sex offenders. Did it come through? Did anyone handle this request? Was there any reflection from the part of the authorities? Were there any answers? What about us that we called for it, did we check to see if it will be done or not?

As a matter of fact, what catches the attention is the education we have inherited from our parents and the legacy we are passing onto our children. We ask for rights during protests, but we surrender and do not insist after. This is the model we are passing on to our children.

We demand, but we do not follow up our requests to the end. This must change. Our children are great imitators and for this we need to give them something great to imitate. Let’s give them persistence to ask for more and not spare anything about security, about rights, about life.

For every day that goes by, we are creating storing memories in the minds of our children. What do we want our children to remember from us? How are we educating them? Let’s give them a memory of how their parent fought for them, so that they too fight for their children in the future.

Let them recall that their parent treated them properly, that life matters, that dignity and personality are important, so that they understand that anyone’s personality, dignity and life matters.

It is not hard to see parents in the streets encouraging their children into bullying others. Parents that use force on their children, parents who push their children to swear and offend others. How do we find a cure for these parents?

We need to ask ourselves. As parents, will be detested or admired? Will we be just parents or geniuses? Everybody knows how children are made, but no one knows how to parent.

We need to choose. Are we going to create a safe society for our children? Or a society of hate, lacking respect and dangerous, with awareness lasting no longer than a day, until another violent incident happens.
