The leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, met virtually with leaders of the European People’s Party.

The chair of EPP, Donald Tusk, praised DP’s program and said that Albania “needs the change more than ever”.

He also added that Albania must join the European Union to improve the welfare of its citizens.

“As the president of the largest European People’s Party family, which represent many parliamentary groupings and European parties, I give my full endorsement to the Democratic Party and I trust that Lulzim Basha and his team will realize the integration of Albania in the EU”, said the EPP president.

He also recalled that DP’s leader Basha was involved in the process that saw Albania joining NATO, as well as visa liberalization.

“My call to the government is to guarantee free and fair elections and to refrain from using dirty money, or pressuring citizens and buying votes to ruin the elections”, said Tusk.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister, said that progress to the EU depends on stable reforms, and referred to the general elections as “crucial” for the country.

“We believe that you will advance the justice reform, lower unemployment, fight against corruption and organized crime, and of course, good neighborly relations and regional cooperation. These aspects are very important for the development of your magnificent country”.

“To conclude, the report cites clearly: April 25 election will be essential for the consolidation and restoration of the Albanian democracy and achieving higher political stability levels”, concluded McAllister.

The leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha expressed his gratitude for EPP’s support on his priorities and launching negotiations with the European Union within his first 100 days in office.

“Today, I want to reiterate my commitment to reopen Albania’s path towards full membership. For 8 years negotiations have been stalling, and this is not the EU’s failure. The Albanian people understand fully clear that this is only the government’s failure as it has not fulfilled the necessary reforms in order for Albania to go forward,”, said Basha, adding that he will guarantee to launch EU accession talks within 100 days in office.
