The special envoy of the United States for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar assessed that the agreement towards normalization of relations between Kosovo and Pristina is “a great achievement” and that it represents “a historic step forward” in the development of relations between the countries.
Escobar said during an interview for Mina agency, that he “sees no reason” why the agreement of the remaining issues cannot be reached by the end of summer.
According to him, there are some elements in Serbia that need to be completed regarding the recognition of car license plates and IDs.
“Kosovo is also expected to form the Association of Serb municipalities. Sorry, this is not on hold, it is an obligation,” said Escobar.
He added that the United States wants these processes to take place as soon as possible.
“I don’t see any reason why it can’t be finished by the end of summer,” Escobar declared.
He recalled that the agreement between the two parties is legally binding and the question now is how to fully implement it.
Escobar expressed optimism that this goal will be achieve and believes that the Prime Minister of Kosovo and the President of Serbia “can show the necessary political courage to take the right steps”.
On February 27th, Kosovo and Serbia reached the Agreement for the normalization of relations in Brussels, while on March 18th, in Ohrid, they agreed on the annex for its implementation.
