The European Union has called for investigations into allegations of irregularities during the elections held in Serbia on December 17 and for the preservation of peace.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the EU, Nabila Massrali, responding to questions about recent developments in Serbia, where protests continue with demands for the annulment of elections and the announcement of new elections.

“Complaints about irregularities in the elections must be properly investigated and addressed. While the right to peaceful protest must be respected, violence is not a solution and is unacceptable,” she said.

On December 17, Serbia held parliamentary, local, and regional elections.

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of President Aleksandar Vučić declared victory at all levels.

The monitoring mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe stated on December 18 that the elections were marked by serious irregularities, misuse of state funds, negative campaigning, and the spread of fear.

Meanwhile, Members of the European Parliament have called for an independent investigation into all irregularities in the Serbian elections.

The United States has also urged authorities in Serbia to investigate claims of irregularities made by international observers.

On December 24, the opposition list, “Serbia against violence”, which has organized several protests against the election results, protested in front of the Municipal Assembly in Belgrade, calling for the annulment of the elections.

The protest was tense, as protesters broke the windows of the building while attempting to enter the Belgrade Municipal Assembly.

Massrali from the EU stated that “police actions must be proportionate and respect fundamental human rights within the rule of law”.

“The EU calls for calm and dialogue,” she said.

So far, the EU has been restrained in its statements on developments in Serbia. Brussels has emphasized the need to address concerns and irregularities but has not specifically addressed the demands of the opposition and students protesting.
