On Wednesday morning, the Commissioner of the European Union for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi is expected to be in Albania for a diplomatic visit.

The Hungarian diplomat is expected to arrive at 10:00 a.m. and his visit will mainly revolve around the EU funding planned for Albania with the aim of handling the current pandemic crisis.

Varhelyi will be symbolically delivering the first batch, part of the total sum of 145 thousand anti-COVID vaccines funded by the EU. He will be holding meetings with PM Edi Rama, which will be followed by a joint press conference.

Part of Varhelyi’s agenda during his visit in Albania is also a meeting with the Chair of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha.

Recently, the Euro Commissioner has started a tour of visits in countries of the Western Balkans, in order to take a direct stance regarding the distribution of vaccines, following a period of delays in shipments from the COVAX mechanism.

In general, the EU says that it has helped the region with a pandemic fund valued at around €3.3 billion euros, projected to help with the current economic and healthcare situation.

As Varhelyi confirmed through a post on Twitter, the EU has contributed with around €376 million euros for projects dealing with economic recovery, 385 million for business enterprises, 750 million for the macro-economic situation and 1.7 billion in loans for the private sectors.

The EU delegation in Albania has announced earlier today that out of this entire economic relief package, Tirana has already acquired the first €90 million euros.
