The European Union, along with both Sweden and Germany, announced this week that they have agreed to supply Albania with 11,7 million euros to fund the country’s innovation ecosystem.

The EU has promised up to 10 million euros, which is part of the EU’s EU4innovation program, with additional support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development along with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, which together aim to strengthen the ecosystem for innovation and start-up promotion in Albania.

Germany’s Development Ministry promised up to 1,2 million euros whilst Sweden’s development agency up to 550,000 euros.

The project first began in February of 2019 initially with a fund of 7,5 million euros, 6,6 million euros of which was provided by the EU.

According to a study done by the World Bank, approximately only 6,100 of the workforces in Albania are in the tech sector, representing a mere 0.7% of employees.

On the 27-28th of May, Mira Murati, the native Albanian and chief officer at OpenAI, the corporation behind the massively successful and industry altering tool CHATGPT, is set to address Doku.Tech, an annual tech conference bringing together local and international tech talent.

Murati is from Vlora, but grew up abroad, studying in Canada and the US. She worked at Goldman Sachs, Zodiac Airspace, Tesla and Leap Motion before joining OpenAI in 2018 and becoming its CTO. She is responsible for overseeing the company’s research, product and safety teams and is a strong advocate of artificial intelligence.

The most famous product of OpenAI is ChatGPT, an AI chatbot and large language model which lets users enter prompts to receive human-like written responses, text, or videos completely created by AI.

Technology is one of the most important and most adaptive industries in modern day and at a time where tech is growing faster than ever, it remains underdeveloped but with huge potential on a local level.
