The European Commission will help North Macedonia and Bulgaria in fighting forest fires, the spokesperson of the European Commission, Balazs Ujvari, said on Tuesday.

He said that four helicopters and three planes for fighting fires have been sent to North Macedonia, which has been in a state of crisis for 30 days.

Ujvari said that two firefighting helicopters will be sent from the Czech Republic to Bulgaria.

In North Macedonia, a complete ban on movement in forests is in force, due to the danger of fires, which threaten hundreds of hectares of land.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, has said that the helicopters offered by Belgrade are only aimed at extinguishing fires and are not a sign of military dominance.

Apart from North Macedonia and Bulgaria, Albania is also facing fires in several areas, writes Radio Free Europe.

Aided by high winds and temperatures, the fires are spreading easily, endangering several settlements.

In recent days, the entire Balkan region is facing extremely high temperatures – up to 40 degrees.
