“Because for Europe a promise made must be a promise kept”. This was the statement made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in her address in front of the European Parliament, referring to the EU membership process with Albania and North Macedonia.

Von der Leyen also turned to Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Jansa, who had introduced to MEPs the priorities of the Slovenian EU Presidency for the upcoming 6 months.

“I hope that together with the Slovenian Presidency, we can vitalize the accession process of Albania and North Macedonia. This is in our own interest. And it is a question of credibility. Because for Europe a promise made must be a promise kept. Slovenia knows how important this is”, said Von der Leyen.

She added that she will stand beside Jansa in order to advance work in the field of rule of law as well foster trust for good governance.

“Europe must do anything it can to prevent a fourth COVID-19 wave and give priority to going back to normal in the next 6 months”, said the Slovenian Prime Minister.

Jansa is planning to organize a summit in October with the leaders of the 27 member states and Western Balkans in a bid to strengthen ties.
