On Tuesday, the heads of the European institutions reiterated the necessity of calming the situation in the north of Kosovo and continuing the process of normalization of relations with Kosovo, after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Bernabić.

Brënabić visited Brussels, where he met with the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Michel, through a post on Twitter, emphasized that he conveyed to the Serbian Prime Minister the message from last week’s summit about the necessity of the urgent extension of the situation in the north of Kosovo and the continuation of the dialogue with the mediation of the EU.

Even the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has emphasized the necessity of continuing the dialogue with Kosovo.

Ana Bërnabiq also met with the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi.

In addition to the relations with Kosovo, in all the meetings the support for Serbia’s European path was emphasized, but the necessity of undertaking the reforms that are key to Serbia’s accession process was also underlined.

As for the situation in the north of Kosovo, the prime minister of Serbia said that “the ball is in Pristina’s court”.

“It is necessary that, first of all, the harassment and persecution of Serbs in Kosovo and the arbitrary arrests and detentions without any evidence, the harassment and torture of people who are completely innocent and for whom there is evidence that they are innocent, from us in EULEX and in the end also in Pristina”, Bërnabiq told reporters.

European officials have repeatedly asked Kosovo and Serbia to take steps to immediately reduce tensions and return to dialogue with the aim of normalizing relations, with the mediation of the EU.

Since the increase of tensions in the north at the end of May, there have been no meetings within the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.

Kosovo Prime Minister Kurti and Serbian President Vucic have held several “crisis meetings” with European officials in Brussels, but they have not had bilateral meetings.

Meetings with mediators in the dialogue, however, ended without concrete results.

Tensions in the north of Kosovo, which is inhabited by a majority of Serbs, began when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities of Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq entered the municipal buildings under the escort of the Kosovo Police.
