The European Union activated on Wednesday the “Civil Protection Mechanism” to come to the aid of countries battling devastating fires across the Mediterranean, including Albania.

The EU announced that it will promptly mobilize the necessary logistics needed to limit the spread of the fires.

  • Two helicopters to support operations in Albania to be dispatched from Czechia and the Netherlands.
  • Slovenia is sending a team of 45 firefighters to North Macedonia.
  • Two firefighting planes from Cyprus are supporting Greece, on top of a firefighting team to support operations on the ground.
  • Two Canadair firefighting airplanes from France are being sent to affected areas in Italy to start firefighting operations today.

The aid sent through the Civil Protection Mechanism also covers 75% of transportation costs.

The EU has also put satellite maps at their disposal which will help the emergency units to coordinate their operations.

Euronews Albania reported earlier during the day that the Netherlands and the Czech Republic are offering air support to the country.
