The European Union has condemned the recent decision of Bosnia and Hercegovina’s Republika Srpska and its authorities to award Russian President Vladimir Putin the highest medal of honor known as the ‘Order of the Republika Srpska’, EU spokesman Peter Stano said.
“In the European Union, there is no place for honoring and rewarding politicians who order the destruction of a neighboring country and the killing of its people. This should be clear to everyone and this decision of the leadership of the Republika Srpska is regrettable and wrong,” said the EU spokesperson at a routine press conference.
Stano also recalled that the Russian president is directly responsible for the illegal aggression in Ukraine and that Ukrainian civilians are being killed and Ukrainian civilian infrastructure is being destroyed.
The president of the entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, presented the award on January 8 for what he said was Putin’s “patriotic care and love for Republika Srpska”.
The authorities of the Republika Srpska celebrate January 9, the date when in Sarajevo in 1992, the then Assembly of the Serbian People approved the Declaration of the Republic of the Serbian People of Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina.
