European leaders call to accelerate the processes of the region’s membership in the European Union.
This is essentially what the statement of the EU and Western Balkans Summit held today in Brussels says.
There are three fundamental pillars of the discussions and concrete actions that are expected to be taken: Acceleration of the membership of the Balkan countries, increased investments by the EU and armoring of cyber security.
“Recalling the Agenda of Thessaloniki and the Declarations of Sofia, Zagreb, Brdo and Tirana, the EU reaffirms its full and clear commitment to the perspective of the membership of the Western Balkans in the European Union and requests the acceleration of the membership process, based on to credible reforms by partners, to fair and strict conditionality and to the principle of everyone’s merit, which is in our mutual interest. The EU welcomes the progress made by the Western Balkans partners in the respective journey towards the EU since the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tirana. The future of the Western Balkans is in our Union”, the statement says.
