The Euro–Lek exchange rate has continued its downward trend during this week. According to the official exchange rate published by the Bank of Albania, the euro was traded today at 96.46 lekë, the lowest level ever recorded.
According to foreign exchange agents, recent days have seen an increased supply of foreign currency in the market, a trend that is more or less typical for this season. In particular, the return of emigrants for the year-end holidays brings higher inflows of the European currency.
On an annual basis, the decline in the exchange rate remains lower compared to previous years. Compared to the same date last year, the Euro–Lek rate has fallen by 2.1%.
However, the more stable performance of the exchange rate during this year is attributed more to interventions by the Bank of Albania than to market forces.
Based on available information, the Central Bank has carried out significant foreign currency purchases throughout 2025 as well. By the end of the first nine months, these purchases amounted to around €800 million, while in 2024 the Bank had purchased an additional €933 million. In the absence of interventions by the Bank of Albania, the euro’s exchange rate would almost certainly have fallen to even lower levels against the lek.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Albania plans to further increase its scheduled foreign currency purchases in the domestic market for 2026. According to information from the Central Bank, it aims to purchase up to €450 million through auctions, with the objective of increasing foreign exchange reserves.
