The hot summer season has begun and with it, holiday planning. In order to give a helping hand to Europeans needing suggestions about where to spend their vacations this summer, the European Environment Agency published a report in the beginning of June, which includes data from the monitoring plan of various coasts during 2020.

The year of the pandemic and isolation has nonetheless had its effect on the restoration of nature. The agency has analyzed over 22 thousand beaches along the seas, lakes and rivers of 28 EU member states, but Switzerland and Albania are also on the list.

A total of 119 beaches were monitored in our country, 91 of which brought back results identifying excellent water quality, 21 of them appeared to have good quality, 2 were satisfactory and unfortunately, 5 of them didn’t receive a passing grade.

In order to determine whether or not the waters of our beaches were of a preferable standard, the agency took samples at the beginning, during and after the tourist season. The classification and conclusions were reached based on the presence of microbes, Escherichia Coli and Intestinal Enterococci in our waters.

Albania’s polluted beaches, according to this agency were the following:

Beach of Zhironit,

Beach of Currila, Durrës

Beach of Poplars / Plepat, Durrës

Beach of Marina

Beach of Pogradec Lake
