Albania allocates much less funds from the general budget for social protection and health compared to the average of the European Union.
Eurostat data showed that the 27 EU member states gave social protection 39.2% of their budget in 2022, while Albania only 30%.
The sector with the highest weight in budget expenditures both in the EU and in Albania is ‘Social Protection’.
This item is dominated by expenditures for the pension fund as well as programs to support families and individuals in need, including economic assistance and disability.
But Albania allocates about 9.2% less funds from its budget for this item than the European Union.
Also, the Albanian government allocates much less funds for health than the EU.
In 2022, the EU countries took 15.5% of the budget expenditures for health, while Albania in the same year gave only 10% of the total budget to health.
For the education sector, both Albania and the EU contribute approximately the same percentage of the budget.
Albania allocates more funds than the EU to cover general public services and economic issues that represent investments.
Environmental protection, even though it is an issue all over the world, received only 1.6% of the EU budget and 1% of Albania’s budget by 2022.
