Eurostat: Life satisfaction of Albanians among lowest in Europe

When asked about how satisfied they are with life, Albanians rate this indicator at 5.7 points on a scale from 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied).

This indicator was measured by Eurostat and pertains to the year 2021.

In comparison to the European Union average, the satisfaction of Albanians is lower. For 2021, the life satisfaction scale in the EU was 7.2, and in 2022, it decreased to 7.1 (for Albania, the latest available data is for 2021).

Albania ranked second with the lowest level of satisfaction in Europe, on par with Bulgaria and only behind Turkey (5.6).

Among other countries in the region with available data, Montenegro had a satisfaction scale of 6.4 in 2021, which dropped to 5.8 in 2022.

In Serbia, the life satisfaction scale increased to 6.1 in 2022, up from 6 in 2021.

North Macedonia has the latest available data from 2020 when the life satisfaction indicator was 6 points.

As for Kosovo, the latest available data is from 2020, with a satisfaction scale of 6 points.

According to Eurostat, life satisfaction can be influenced by various factors such as age, education level, family and financial status, as well as the diversity of individual experiences, choices, priorities, and values.

In Albania, both males and females have the same level of life satisfaction, both at 5.7 points.

In Albania, life satisfaction is lower among the elderly, with the age group over 65 having a scale of 5.4 points, lower than the country’s average of 5.7 points, and higher among young people aged 16-19, with 6.3 points.

Regarding the level of education, individuals with lower education are less satisfied with life, with a scale rating of 5.4 points, while those with higher education have a higher satisfaction level at 6.5 points.

European Union

According to Eurostat, in 2022, people in the EU rated their overall life satisfaction on average at 7.1 points on a scale from 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied). For 18 out of 27 EU countries, overall life satisfaction was rated above or the same as the EU average.

The highest ratings were in Austria (7.9), Finland, Poland, and Romania (each with 7.7), Belgium and the Netherlands (both with 7.6), and the lowest in Bulgaria (5.6), Germany (6.5), and Greece (6.7).

In all countries except Bulgaria, the average life satisfaction ratings were above 6, meaning that the majority of people in the EU declared themselves satisfied rather than dissatisfied.

This subjective indicator of the well-being of European citizens is collected as part of EU statistics on income and living conditions.
