Albania has recorded 20 measles cases in 2025, marking a significant decrease compared to the 49 cases registered in 2024, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Experts warn that although Europe and Central Asia have recorded a 75% decline in cases — from over 127,000 in 2024 to around 34,000 in 2025 — the risk of epidemic outbreaks remains high.
UNICEF and WHO report that more than 200,000 people have been affected by measles over the past three years, while some countries reported more cases in 2025 than in 2024.
Experts emphasize that the reduction in cases is linked to control measures and outbreak response efforts, but insufficient vaccination coverage remains a concern. To prevent the spread of the virus, every community must achieve 95% coverage with two doses of the vaccine.
Measles is one of the most contagious viruses, with one infected person capable of transmitting the disease to up to 18 unvaccinated individuals.
WHO and UNICEF underline that strengthening vaccination efforts and combating misinformation are essential for eliminating measles and protecting public health.
