Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano has passed away at the age of 73.
Nano had been hospitalized for more than three weeks in a private hospital in the capital, in critical condition.
He had suffered clinical death (cardiocirculatory arrest) at his home and had been under medical observation for several weeks.
Fatos Nano was one of the most prominent figures of Albania’s post-communist democratic transition after the 1990s.
He led the Socialist Party from its founding, turning it into a major political force and later into a governing party.
During years of deep economic and social challenges, Nano served several terms as Prime Minister, leaving a mark on the country’s reform processes and efforts toward stabilization.
Throughout his career, Nano was recognized for his role in modernizing Albania’s left wing and bringing the country’s politics closer to European standards.

Fatos Nano was born on September 16, 1952, in Tirana.
He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tirana and became involved in public life after the fall of the communist regime.
In 1991, he founded the Socialist Party of Albania, serving as its chairman until 2005.
Nano served as Prime Minister of the country in 1991, 1997–1998, and 2002–2005.
During his leadership, he sought to strengthen democratic institutions, promote Albania’s openness toward Europe, and stabilize the country after years of political and economic turmoil.
