Four churches designated as cultural monuments in Vithkuq and Voskopoja have completed the restoration process.
Prime Minister Edi Rama shared images of the revitalized churches following restoration, ready to welcome worshippers, visitors, and tourists.
The restorations include the churches of St. Mary and St. Michael, as well as the monasteries of St. John the Forerunner (St. Prodromos) and St. Peter, located in Korçë County. Due to their poor condition, these sites had been heading toward ruin.
The restoration process lasted two years and, in addition to construction works, included conservation of the churches’ and monasteries’ mural paintings. In two of the churches—St. Mary and St. Michael—the restoration of mural paintings was also carried out.
The overall project for all four sites also included interior and exterior lighting, aimed at highlighting their architectural and religious values.
Voskopoja and Vithkuq reached the height of their prosperity in the early 17th century and are known for having had a combined total of 48 churches and monasteries during that period, some of which still exist today.
