Fredi Beleri traveled this Monday from Fier prison, towards Athens, after he was able to get permission to be sworn in as an MEP in Strasbourg.

Unaccompanied by the officers, Beleri arrived in Athens at around 12:30, where he was welcomed in a meeting for about 40 minutes by the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Greek media write that the meeting was warm and took place in the Maximos Palace.

The Greek Prime Minister congratulated Beleri, saying that he “hoped that very soon he will be released from prison forever”.

“I have many reasons, dear Fred, to be happy to welcome you today to Megaros Maximos. First, let me congratulate you on your election as a Greek MEP, in Brussels and Strasbourg, with New Democracy. I am sure that you will fully fulfill your duties. Let me tell you how happy I am that this great adventure is coming to an end. It goes without saying, you got the license so you could exercise your duties and take the oath. I hope that very soon you will get out of prison forever, that this painful chapter will be closed for all of us, that we can move forward, look forward”, said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

For his part, MEP Beleri thanked the Greek Prime Minister for the support given. He added that: “Prime Minister, I want to thank you personally for supporting me all this time. I will honor the trust you have placed in me by putting me on the ballot for MEP.  I think that in the state where I live, the right to choose and to be chosen is not self-evident. I want to help the Greek national minority to stay in their ancestral homes, but also for this country to come closer and become a member of the European family”.

After the meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, Beleri, he is expected to travel to Strasbourg, where he will take up his duties as a member of the European Parliament. on July 20, he must return to Fier prison, where he will have to serve the remainder of his 2-year sentence.
