The Interfaith Council of Albania has “thanked the ruling majority, the opposition, and the media for their stance regarding the draft law on gender equality,” following the decision to amend the much-debated proposal by removing the concept of “inclusive” gender definitions and recognizing only two genders — male and female.

The Socialist Party has submitted 22 amendments that eliminate the terms “inclusive” and “gender diversity,” replacing them with clear wording that defines only two genders.

In an official statement, the Council emphasized that this decision reflects respect for natural values and the fundamental principles of Albanian society, as well as sensitivity toward the country’s cultural and religious traditions.

“The Interfaith Council of Albania values the dialogue, cooperation, and prudence shown throughout this process, considering it a positive example of institutional responsibility and care for the common good,” the statement said.

The statement concludes by reaffirming the Council’s commitment to contribute to all initiatives related to the protection of human, social, and moral values, as well as to support sustainable development and Albania’s integration into the European Union.

The draft law has been submitted to Parliament and, along with the Socialist amendments, will now be discussed in parliamentary committees. Its final vote in the plenary session is scheduled for October 30.
