The Special Envoy of the State Department to the Western Balkans, Mattew Palmer, declared that Kosovo will have to present strong arguments prior to taking Serbia to court over genocide claims.

“We want Kosovo and Serbia to progress and create opportunities to normalize ties through the EU mediated dialogue”, said Palmer during an interview for local media RTV 21.

According to the high US official, Kosovo and Serbia must focus on the future and not the past.

“I think that this approach will not help to solve the problems between Serbia and Kosovo. We would like to see not only in the case of Serbia and Kosovo, but for the entire region, for parties to focus more on the future, and not in the past”, added Palmer.

According to him, it is important to find some common points with Serbia on the future of Kosovo as well as normalize ties in order to make some progress.

Furthermore, he added that it is Kosovo’s “sovereign right” to sue Serbia, however urged instead to focus on the dialogue for the normalization of relations with Serbia.
