Germany is set to deploy approximately 150 troops to Kosovo in April of the upcoming year, as announced by a spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense on Friday.

Currently, KFOR (Kosovo Force) comprises around 4,500 soldiers from 27 NATO member states and partner nations.

The decision to send German troops is unrelated to the ongoing tensions in north Kosovo. Instead, it is meant to compensate for the withdrawal of Austrian troops from the KFOR mission.

Importantly, the addition of German soldiers will not result in an overall increase in the total number of KFOR troops stationed in Kosovo.

Germany currently has 71 military personnel stationed in Kosovo.

The spokesperson emphasized that decisions regarding changes to the force composition within KFOR are always made through a multinational decision-making process. This ensures that contributions from various nations are carefully considered.

The announcement follows the recent confirmation from the United Kingdom that it will be sending an additional 400 troops to Kosovo, further reinforcing the KFOR mission.

Commander of KFOR Angelo Michele Ristuccia had previously mentioned plans for additional troop reinforcements.

Ristuccia stressed the importance of a political solution as the only means to guarantee lasting peace in the Balkan region.

He reiterated KFOR’s steadfast support for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia with the goal of normalizing their relations.

The situation in the region has become increasingly tense, particularly in north Kosovo, following a series of incidents. These developments underscore the ongoing instability and the potential for further escalation, according to Ristuccia.

The heightened tensions stem from attacks on the Kosovo Police in Banjska, Zvecan, on September 24, resulting in the tragic death of police officer Afrim Bunjaku.

During the ensuing confrontation, three Serbian attackers also lost their lives.

While Kosovo has accused Serbia of being responsible for the attack, Serbia has vehemently denied any involvement.
