Intense rainfall this winter has caused landslides of soil and inert materials in Gjirokastër. Geological specialists are calling for the implementation of investments in areas affected by erosion in order to prevent risks to residents.

“We need to take protective measures, which include the projects and investments required to protect ourselves from these natural phenomena. The focus should primarily be on continuous monitoring by environmental specialists, geologists, and construction engineers, so that action is not taken only after a disaster occurs or when we are on the verge of a natural catastrophe,” said geologist specialist Çano Nora.

Experts are also appealing for environmental protection measures, including preventing the dumping of urban waste into stream beds and expanding forested areas to reduce damage from flooding.

“To protect ourselves from these natural disasters, from rainfall like what occurred this year in Gjirokastër, beyond keeping streams clean—because streams are not trash bins where all kinds of waste can be dumped—waste should not be thrown away, waters should be properly drained, and trees should not be cut,” the geologist added.

Heavy rainfall in recent days caused serious problems in Gjirokastër, with many homes and businesses flooded and damaged.
