Laert Haxhiu will not be extradited to Albania, but will serve the sentence in Greece only for the criminal offenses of leaving the scene of the accident and disturbing the public peace.

The decision was taken this Tuesday by the Court of Ioannina, which rejected the request of the Albanian Prosecutor’s Office that requested the extradition of Haxhiu, in order to bring before justice the charge of involvement in the 2017 massacre in Lushnje where Zamir Latifi and Jurgen Hoxha were killed.

Laert Haxhiu’s lawyer, Detar Hysi, tells Euronews Albania that the Greek court accepted the claims that his client’s life is in danger in Albania.

However, despite the refusal of extradition, the Basic Prosecutor’s Office of Janina is expected to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal, requesting the extradition of Laert Haxhiu to Albania.

His arrest was finalized by the police of the neighboring country as Laert Haxhiu was driving a BMW type vehicle together with 35-year-old Juxhin Bajrami, and 22-year-old Firdeus Berberi from Pogradeci who was also wanted by the Albanian authorities for injuries.

Initially, they did not obey the police order to stop, but in an attempt to leave, their BMW hit 3 vehicles and finally collided with a curb.
